PELION
Where Mountains Meet the Sea
A destination unlike any other, Pelion combines lush forests, traditional villages, and spectacular beaches. Every season reveals a different side of its beauty, making it a wonderful retreat throughout the year.
EXPLORE PELION
Some destinations are famous for their beaches. Others for their mountains. Pelion offers both—and does so in a way that feels almost magical. Located on a lush peninsula between Athens and Thessaloniki, Pelion is one of Greece’s most diverse and enchanting regions. Here, traditional stone villages cling to forested mountainsides, hidden beaches are washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean, and winding roads lead to breathtaking viewpoints around every corner. According to Greek mythology, Pelion was the home of the Centaurs, the legendary half-human, half-horse creatures, and it doesn’t take long to understand why this landscape inspired so many myths. Ancient forests, waterfalls, mountain trails and secluded coves create a destination unlike anywhere else in Greece. At Yamas, we recommend Pelion to travellers looking for authenticity, nature, outstanding food and elegant villas surrounded by spectacular scenery. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with family or a group of friends, Pelion offers one of Greece’s most rewarding and unforgettable experiences.
HIGHLIGHTS OF PELION
Beaches Worth Discovering
One of Pelion’s greatest surprises is the quality of its beaches. Unlike many Greek destinations, the beaches here are surrounded by lush green mountains rather than dry landscapes.
Mylopotamos Beach is undoubtedly the most famous. Divided into two sections by a dramatic rock arch, its turquoise water and impressive scenery have made it one of Greece’s most photographed beaches.
Fakistra Beach is another spectacular hidden gem. Accessible via a short walk through the forest, it offers crystal-clear water and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
Agios Ioannis is a long sandy beach ideal for families, while nearby Papa Nero provides a quieter alternative with excellent tavernas just steps from the sea.
Damouchari, a tiny fishing harbour made famous by the film Mamma Mia!, remains one of Pelion’s most picturesque locations.
Local Cuisine
Food is one of Pelion’s greatest pleasures. The region is famous for combining mountain and coastal traditions, resulting in one of Greece’s richest culinary scenes.
Fresh seafood naturally dominates the coastal villages, while mountain tavernas specialise in slow-cooked meats, handmade pies and seasonal vegetables.
Pelion is particularly famous for its apples, chestnuts, mushrooms, local herbs and homemade spoon sweets.
Traditional pies filled with wild greens or local cheeses are found throughout the region, while tsipouro remains the drink of choice, often served alongside generous plates of meze.

Restaurants We Love
Kritsa Restaurant in Portaria has become one of Pelion’s culinary landmarks, serving beautifully prepared traditional recipes using local ingredients.
Synantisi in Tsagarada is another favourite, known for its authentic mountain cuisine and warm hospitality.
In Damouchari, several waterfront tavernas serve exceptionally fresh seafood overlooking the picturesque harbour.
Guests staying near Agios Ioannis should also take the opportunity to enjoy lunch at one of the beachfront tavernas specialising in grilled fish and local delicacies.

Taste Pelion Through a Village Food Tour
One of the best ways to discover the region is by combining village visits with local gastronomy.
Stop in Makrinitsa for traditional spoon sweets, continue to Tsagarada for homemade pies and local herbs, then finish in Milies with slow-cooked lamb or handmade pasta accompanied by local tsipouro.

Paddleboarding at Agios Ioannis
The calm morning waters of Agios Ioannis are ideal for stand-up paddleboarding.
Early morning offers the best conditions, with crystal-clear water and spectacular views of Pelion’s green coastline.
Private Boat Cruise Along the East Coast
One of our favourite Yamas experiences is chartering a private boat from Agios Ioannis or Damouchari.
Spend the day discovering hidden coves, swimming beneath dramatic cliffs and stopping at remote beaches that can only be reached by boat. Many captains also include snorkelling equipment and recommend quiet bays for lunch or swimming.
Sea Kayaking Around Damouchari & Fakistra
The dramatic eastern coastline of Pelion is best appreciated from the water.
Guided sea kayaking excursions departing from Damouchari allow visitors to paddle beneath towering cliffs, explore sea caves and reach secluded beaches such as Fakistra and Papa Nero that are even more impressive from the sea.
Explore Mylopotamos and Fakistra in One Day
These are two of Pelion’s most spectacular beaches and are located only a short drive apart. Begin the morning at Mylopotamos before the crowds arrive, then continue to Fakistra, where a short forest trail leads to one of the most beautiful hidden beaches in Greece.
Visit Milies and the Forest Trails
Milies is much more than a beautiful village. Several walking paths begin here, leading through chestnut forests, old stone bridges and traditional mountain scenery. It is also an excellent place to enjoy lunch after a morning hike.
Discover the Hidden Village of Kissos
Often overlooked by visitors, Kissos is one of Pelion’s most authentic villages. Its impressive church, shaded square and traditional cafés make it the perfect stop while exploring the mountain villages.
Go Horse Riding Through the Forest
Several local riding centres offer guided horseback excursions through olive groves, forest trails and traditional villages.
It is a unique way to experience Pelion’s countryside and particularly popular with families and couples.
